Precision work on the E40: 36-metre pylon successfully installed

Positioning a 36-metre-high pylon in the middle of the E40 is a remarkable engineering feat that requires thorough preparation. We relied on the expertise of our colleagues to lift the new cable-stayed bridge for the F29 cycle highway in Heverlee into place.

Over the past few weeks, the pylon was assembled alongside the motorway, where we cast it on site using approximately 36 m³ of concrete. This weekend, we lifted the structure using two lifting points before moving it to the central reservation of the E40. There, cranes and hydraulic jacks allowed us to position the pylon precisely in its final location. We then attached the first four stay cables to the pylon and the bridge deck. The remaining ten cables will be installed next weekend.

A direct cycling connection across the E40

The new cable-stayed bridge is part of the F29 cycle highway between Tervuren and Leuven. Currently, cyclists have to take a detour via Bertem or Heverlee to cross the E40. The bridge will provide a direct and safe crossing, making the cycling route shorter, more comfortable and safer.
