Bertem’s Bowstring Bridge now rests securely on its abutments

After months of preparation, the new bowstring bridge in Bertem reached its final position above the E40 overnight. Weighing 4,000 tonnes, the bridge was lifted using hydraulic jacks and transported nearly 200 metres to its final location by Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs). It was a technically challenging operation that we successfully completed.

From construction site to final position

Since early 2025, we have been working in Bertem to replace the bridge carrying the Tervuursesteenweg (N3) over the E40. Over the past few months, the new bowstring bridge was assembled on a construction site alongside the E40. Meanwhile, the abutments were completed at the bridge’s final location.

After months of preparation, the moment finally arrived overnight: the bowstring bridge was on the move. The 4,000-tonne structure was lifted using hydraulic jacks before SPMTs transported it nearly 200 metres to its final position above the E40.

The distance may seem relatively short, but the size and weight of the structure, combined with the limited manoeuvring space, made the operation a real exercise in precision. Every movement was carefully planned and closely monitored.

An impressive sight

The bridge installation could also be watched from close by. Many interested onlookers gathered in a specially designated, safe viewing area to witness the operation.

The next phase

Positioning the bowstring bridge marks a major milestone, but there is still work to be done.

Over the coming period, work will continue on finishing the bridge and its surroundings. The Tervuursesteenweg will also be renewed on both sides of the bridge, and a Hoppin mobility hub will be developed at the carpool parking area.
