STADSBADER CONTRACTORS builds Belgium’s largest energy storage facility
Construction of Green Turtle, GIGA Storage’s large-scale energy storage project in Dilsen-Stokkem, has officially started. Commissioned by Tesla, STADSBADER CONTRACTORS is responsible for the civil engineering works. Right next to it, we are also building the new high-voltage infrastructure for Elia, to which Green Turtle will be directly connected. The two projects are therefore closely linked and together form important links in the energy infrastructure of the future.
Civil engineering works commissioned by Tesla
Green Turtle will become one of Europe’s largest battery parks and will be directly connected to the Belgian high-voltage grid. The project comprises 640 Tesla Megapack 3 batteries, providing 700 MW of power and a storage capacity of 2,800 MWh.
STADSBADER CONTRACTORS is once again making its mark on the energy transition. For the earthworks and concrete works we are carrying out for Tesla, approximately 45,000 m³ of soil will be moved, 7,350 m³ of concrete will be poured and 933 tonnes of reinforcement steel will be installed. Work on Green Turtle started in August 2026. The battery park is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of March 2028.
A new link in the energy infrastructure
The location of the new battery park, adjacent to the Elia site, is no coincidence. Right next to the construction area, STADSBADER CONTRACTORS is also building a new high-voltage substation. Green Turtle will be connected to the Belgian high-voltage grid via this new Elia substation. The two projects are therefore directly interconnected.

Major impact on the energy grid, minimal impact on the surrounding area
While we are building infrastructure that will have a major impact on tomorrow’s energy grid, we are making every effort to keep the impact on the immediate surroundings as limited as possible. No topsoil will be transported to or from the construction site. Existing vegetation typical of the region will be preserved wherever possible. In other areas, we are opting for no less than 35,000 m² of landscaping using locally native vegetation.
The local fauna is also being taken into account. An ecological protocol has been put in place for toads, and insect hotels will also be provided.
