Tongeren rail tunnel successfully inserted

In Tongeren, we reached an important milestone in the construction of the new rail tunnel: the tunnel was successfully inserted into its final position. This technically complex operation required thorough preparation and precise execution.

We started with the installation of sheet piles and the construction of a watertight cofferdam. After laying a reinforced and polished floor, we built the tunnel structure next to the railway, fully prepared for the insertion operation.

During insertion week, we worked continuously 24/7. The existing tracks were temporarily removed, and a large volume of soil was excavated in a short time. The tunnel was then moved step by step into its final position, and the area was backfilled to the required level. The railway infrastructure and overhead lines were subsequently reinstalled, allowing train traffic to safely resume.
