Bertem arch bridge ready to be positioned above the E40
On Saturday 10 October, the new arch bridge in Bertem will take up its final position above the E40. Weighing four thousand tonnes, standing thirty metres high and travelling almost two hundred metres, this will be a technically challenging operation. Anyone who would like to witness this unique moment up close is welcome to follow the positioning from a safe location.
From construction site to final location
Since the beginning of 2025, we have been working in Bertem on the renewal of the bridge carrying the Tervuursesteenweg (N3) over the E40. Over the past few months, the new arch bridge has been built at the construction site alongside the E40, and the abutments at the final location have also been completed.
The big moment is now fast approaching. During the night from Saturday 10 to Sunday 11 October, the bridge will be lifted using jacks and moved to its final location using Self Propelled Modular Trailers (SPMTs). Although it only has to travel 200 metres, the size and weight of the structure, and above all the limited manoeuvring space, make this a challenging operation. One that requires careful preparation and execution.
Viewing area at close range
The positioning of the arch bridge is a unique moment in itself. What makes it even more special is the fact that the operation can be followed from close range.
Anyone who would like to follow the operation up close is welcome on Saturday 10 October between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. at Tervuursesteenweg 308. The construction site itself will remain strictly closed, but the movement of the bridge can be followed from close range from the specially arranged, safe location.
Visitors will thus get a unique view of the bridge as it gradually takes up its final position.
Please note: we ask everyone to come on foot or by bicycle wherever possible. Parking will be limited.
Finishing phase
After the positioning, the finishing works will follow. The Tervuursesteenweg will be further renewed before and after the bridge, and the Hoppin point at the carpool parking area will be developed. The finishing works on the bridge itself will also continue.
