With a length of 427 m, a width of 55 m and a depth of 16.44 m, the lock will be one of the largest locks in the world, comparable to those in Antwerp, Amsterdam and Panama. The first ship is expected to pass through the new lock by the end of 2023. During construction, there should be as little disruption as possible to shipping, road users and the surrounding area.
The design and construction contract, as well as a two-year maintenance contract for this huge project, was awarded to the Dutch-Belgian consortium Sassevaart.
