Bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Scheldt

By order of Flemish Waterway, in cooperation with the municipality of Wetteren and the Intermunicipal Cooperation Association Scheldt Landscape Park (IGS-SLP), a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Scheldt was constructed. This was to provide a safer and smoother crossing for the vulnerable road users between the left and right banks of the Scheldt, and replace the old 'passerelle' that was at the end of its lifespan. Moreover, the new bridge has a clearance of 7 metres, allowing 'three-layer container ships' to pass under it. This is our contribution to European and Flemish plans to make the Upper-Zeescheldt more navigable. The new pedestrian and cyclist bridge ties in with the 'Wetteren aan de Schelde' urban renewal project, which aims to strengthen the link between the river, the municipality and its inhabitants.

In the zone where the approach ramp 'lands' on the left bank at the level of Kapellendries, New Bridge and Tragelweg, we carried out a complete reconstruction of the square as of Tragelweg. The existing water retaining wall was also raised and renovated with concrete panels with masonry appearance. Finally, we also demolished the old 'passerelle'.
