Site in the spotlight: Zennegat
Riverbank Restoration Zennegat
In Mechelen, near the Zennegat, we are applying our hydraulic engineering expertise. Our team is restoring the right bank of the Zenne. Dislodged stones, eroded joints and washed-out subsoil had caused local subsidence. After removing the riprap at the foot of the embankment, we are currently installing sheet piles from a pontoon in the water.
In the next phases, we will remove the existing bank protection, level the bank with suitable soil, and install geotextile and a filter layer. This will be followed by block mats and riprap, after which the masonry will be rebuilt using reclaimed natural stones from the current riverbank. Finally, the protruding sheet piles will be cut off to protect boats against collision.
We fully respect the historical and scenic character of the site: the new riverbank protection will have the same appearance as the existing wall, including a slight curvature. A fine example of how safety, sustainability and seamless integration into the landscape can go hand in hand!
