NEXT puts Overijse cycle bridge in the spotlight

This year again, Buildwise brought together various stakeholders from the sector during NEXT to discuss today’s challenges and tomorrow’s solutions. This edition focused on innovation, collaboration and value creation as key drivers for a sustainable, affordable and profitable construction sector.

One of our projects was highlighted during the event: the F204 cycle highway, including the new cycle bridge made of geopolymer concrete in Overijse. This bridge is the result of close collaboration between several partners. De Werkvennootschap acts as the client, while THV Zoniën Mobiel is responsible for the design. The Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer and Expertise Beton en Staal are also involved in the follow-up of the project, which is carried out by our project team. As an independent research institute, Buildwise coordinates the extensive research, testing and validation programme surrounding the geopolymer concrete.

This concrete is what makes the cycle bridge so unique. It offers an innovative alternative to traditional cement concrete and also has a lower ecological footprint. As part of this pilot project, the concrete is being extensively tested for performance, durability and feasibility. The bridge will also be equipped with sensors to monitor the behaviour of the geopolymer concrete over the coming years.

A great opportunity for one of our colleagues to present the F204 cycle highway, the geopolymer concrete cycle bridge and the broader context of the works around the Brussels Ring during NEXT.

A great example of how innovation in construction helps shape the infrastructure of tomorrow!
